Tensho Boxing Academy was built on resilience, mentorship, and the belief that the right people can change the direction of a life. This is our story.
When he was 19, Dr. Christian Waldon was almost out of chances. Ending his last freshman semester with a 0.46 GPA, a lost scholarship, and the possibility of being dismissed from college, he felt life slipping away.
But stepping into a boxing gym at 20 and meeting the mentors who would guide him became a turning point. Boxing didn't just teach him how to fight — it taught him discipline, excellence, empowerment, and the importance of facing challenges with purpose.
"Boxing and sports will be here forever. But your school, your career, your family, and your life won't be."
— Coach James "Ponytail" HoganThose words fueled his return to academics and ultimately pushed him all the way to becoming an engineer specializing in artificial intelligence — a field where discipline, focus, and relentless learning are everything.
As Dr. Waldon grew, he never let go of boxing. He started coaching at Ashburn Boxing Academy — first helping with youth programs, then leading strength and conditioning for amateurs and professionals, and eventually mentoring fighters at every level.
Over time, he realized something important: most people weren't coming to boxing just to fight. They were coming because life was heavy. Because they needed an outlet. Because they wanted confidence, community, and a space to grow.
And inside the gym, none of the outside labels mattered — race, religion, background, income. What mattered was effort. What mattered was family. What mattered was showing up for yourself and for each other.
When Ashburn Boxing Academy closed, Dr. Christian's journey didn't end. He was invited to bring his family next door to Exsurgo — where he continued to coach and support the people who counted on him, not just in the ring, but in life.
Tensho Boxing Academy exists to build more than fighters — it exists to build humans of character. Our mission is to guide individuals toward discipline, resilience, and purpose through the art of boxing.
We believe that every person who walks through our doors is capable of becoming stronger in every dimension of life: mentally, physically, and emotionally. Boxing is simply the medium — the true work happens in the development of integrity, accountability, confidence, and self-leadership.
Our mission is to provide a space where:
Whether a youth stepping into their first class or an adult rediscovering their strength, these values guide everything we do.
Consistency that carries into every area of life — in the gym and beyond the ropes.
Raise the standard every session. We push past limits and carry ourselves with dignity.
Build individuals prepared for life — not just the fight. Confidence starts here.
Inside the gym, what matters is effort and family — not background, race, or income.
Face challenges with courage. Growth requires showing up, even when it's hard.
Leaders. Partners. Friends. Family. Our members take lessons from the gym into the world.
This gym exists because boxing gave Dr. Waldon the tools to change his life. It exists because every person who walks through the doors deserves what he found: growth, confidence, discipline, and a family that pushes you to become more than a fighter.
